Are Spiritual Attacks Exclusive To Nigeria?

Our neighbour, Baba Ore, died on Friday and no thanks to the fear of Ebola, he had to be buried hastily- on Saturday evening.

I won’t be surprised if it had to be so because the hospitals or mortuary had refused to keep his corpse, the way they rejected that of a friend’s father, who died at home.

My parents had gone to attend the ‘humble’ funeral ceremony and upon return, I asked my mom all about the matter.

Baba Ore, a husband and father of one little girl (Ore), was a danfo driver. He had managed to build a small house on a piece of land. Probably, one quarter of a plot. I’m not sure if he was a Christian or Muslim.

Prior to his death, he had been sick but the doctors could not cure his disease; At least that’s what he told them.

Why? It was a spiritual attack.

Now if you are Nigerian, this should not be a strange thing. You most likely have heard about such a thing before.

If you are not Nigerian, you may be familiar with terms like voodoo, witch doctor or dark magic.

BUT if you are still lost, please go watch any of the ‘Harry Potter’ movies.

So, Baba Ore had gone for medical consultation quite alright but that didn’t bring any solution to the odd swelling on his neck.

His health deteriorated day after day.

Towards the end, he had lost his sight. By the time he died, his wife was a shadow of herself. Drained of any glow and in deep despair.

Her husband had died because of a spiritual attack. Something people generally believe cannot be countered using science or technology.

No!

For such cases, pastors, imams, babalawos (witch doctors/traditional doctors) are called upon to save the day.

This is reportedly so because medical doctors will never be able to diagnose any disease, even if it is obvious to the naked eye that the patient is seriously unwell.

So this got me wondering… how many of such mysterious cases are recorded in advanced countries?

Do ‘oyinbos’ or the highly enlightened folks also have or believe in spiritual attacks?

Is this a case of ‘if you believe in it, then it can happen to you’?

Do people accept such an idea because they are overly religions or spiritual?

What’s your take on the matter?

Do you believe in spiritual attacks? (Let me know in the comments section)

  1. Spiritual attacks are real, dear. Christians have spiritual attacks, they just don’t know that is what it is. They are too modernized. Churches get attacked spiritually but they are too modern to believe that the devil will oppose God’s work on earth.

I believe in spiritual attacks because I have been attack spiritually. I used to get pressed at night until I gave my life to Christ. Soon afterwards that disappeared.

If you don’t believe in spiritual attacks abroad, please don’t watch their horror movies. It is usually a documentation of the things that they don’t understand.

I believe that there is a devil who has demons working on earth against man. I believe that there is a God with angels who protects His children against the schemes of the devil. Pick a side.

Choose not to believe and you are still vulnerable. You just choose to pretend that you don’t have an enemy in the devil and so you are unaware of the weapons that you have and that you are supposed to be living in dominion over the devil and his works.

Spiritual attacks aren’t phony but real. Not necessarily because I am a Christian but because I have been privy to some instances. May God have mercy.

“Spiritual attack” is just a load of horse-shit (pardon my French). Something that is spiritual should transcend geographical & ideological divides. No? Ask yourself why it doesn’t work in Europe & the US. Our level of medical awareness here in Africa is still embryonic. Hence the ease with which we attribute a lot of “uncurable” ailments to spiritual forces.

Even the bible says: for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness of this world and SPIRITUAL wickedness in high places.

Like Tessa rightly said, believing or not doesn’t make them less what they are. However, with the assurance of such prevailing evil as documented in the bible, comes the spiritual antidote: the armour of God (Ephesians 6: 10-18).

Advise, know they are there, but know they can be countered and defeated or defended. Also, be careful, for the curse causeless shall not come (Proverbs 26: 2)

Yes, I believe in spiritual attacks, but the problem some christians have is that, they don’t take cognizance of it to avert the plans of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 tells us to put on the whole armour of GOD, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Well my sister, ordinarily it’s important to have understanding of what is spiritual and how can one be spiritually attacked, why by spiritual way and the true essence of spiritualism origin.
    1. What is Spiritual? In a lame language, spiritual is anything that has connection with divinity either for evils or good purpose. It is something that is existing which cannot been seen with a physical eyes but can be felt either individual person or collective groups of people or people’s based on whatever the purpose may be Acts 2:1-2.
    2. How Can One Be Spiritually Attacked: biblically in Mark 5:1-12, there was a story of a man who was in a possessions of demonic forces. Another individual was an old woman who according to Bible was afflicted whereby she couldn’t walked straight for many years. Until Jesus came to the two mentioned cases, no one could helped them out of it. I am writing from scriptural angle because am a Christian, but there are other cases outside christian which are well known too which I can’t say much about now, but maybe when I have the time to do much explicit on, but we know exists.
    3. Why By Spiritual ways? The reason or reasons why it comes by spiritual way is because everything that is existing in life was by spiritual means and therefore it is only by this means possession of people can be controlled from. In Gen 1:1-3 bible says in the beginning earth was void and formless but the spirit of God was hovering over the surface…… that shows that everything about creation started after the spiritual intervention! (More can be said on this but I am not all that chanced). Man uses spiritual way to attack men because every physical attack done or carried by man against his neighbors or physical things has penalty, because there’s evidence to proven him guilty of the charges. But what is done spiritually cannot be proven by any law except such individual is exposed by divinity.
Finally spiritual things are spiritual and an ordinary people cannot in any way understand or analyze it. That’s why bible says in Ephesians that we shouldn’t as Christians be ignorant of the devices of the enemy the devil. I hope my contribution is well understood. Internationally spiritual things are well respected but are not overlaying like here in Africa because western knowledge has advanced their ways whereby mindsets are more committed to using their knowledge to better things around them. But here in Africa even little chances of having such gifts are used for wickedness and selfish ambition whereby talents are wasted and destroyed too.

The Bible is very clear on the existence of spiritual warfare. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom to devour. Many problems we encounter seem ordinary because we have God and his host of angels fighting on on our behalf while we play ignorant. Paul in the bible notes that believers battle against the devil’s schemes and that this is a spiritual battle, not a physical one. So clearly they exist

  9. Ofcourse there are spiritual attacks and they arent localized to Nigeria, their manifestations differ from place. But a lot of what we term spiritual attacks in this part of the world are simply not (most of them have a strong root of ignorance) but since our religious orientation easily classify things as spiritual attack, the devil moves in to confirm our fears.

Hi Mayowa, I like your line of thought. Honestly i have thought about that topic in passing once. its not only exclusive to Nigeria. in my opinion i think there are levels of spiritual attacks depending on the environment. Its well known the same thing wont work for everybody. Only someone with keen eye of observation and an open mind may accept the reality of such attacks a The thing about advanced countries is that they like to give a name to everything. For example someone wakes up and shoots someone and kills himself they call it PTSD even when the individual never went to a single war in his life or funny enough had a good childhood ( so where does the trauma come from). if i may delve a little spiritual the bible says the devil is a deceiver and has multiple ways how he attacks MR A is different is different from how he attacks MRS B, Thus their kind of spiritual attacks varies to the African countries, also African countries are more traditional in their upbringing so their awareness to things of that nature.

  11. Beleive me , there re spiritual attacks. Just the way there are witches in nigeria(africa in general), same way they are everywhere. There re some spiritual attacks whereby theu disguise under a particular ailment but if one is spiritually conscious at the early phase, it could be dealt with. That’s why deliverance programs are organised. We shall not be victims of such in Christ’s name.

Well, has a Christian my bible tells me it is real. But sometimes these “undiagonsable” diseases are due to the low level of our medical technology, knowledge and care in Nigeria. Spiritual attacks are real but medical ignorance is also very real.
